ACL Tear
Your anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is one of the four primary ligaments that provide crucial stability to your knee.
The ACL sits diagonally across your knee and connects the femur and the tibia. The ACL also provides rotational stability in your knee. When an ACL tears, it usually results from the following movements:
- A sudden change in direction
- A sudden stop or slowing down
- Landing incorrectly
- Direct contact/ force
An ACL tear can be common for people who play sports, but you can also injure your ACL during the course of your everyday routine or work.
At the Knee Institute at ORTHOKnox, Dr. David Hovis has treated patients with ACL tears from a variety of backgrounds and lifestyles: from professional athletes to teachers and students.
ACL Tear Symptoms
When the ACL is torn, many people report hearing a loud popping noise, and their knee suddenly gives out. Typical ACL tears are also indicated by pain and swelling, as well as loss of range of motion, mobility, and stability. If you believe you have an ACL tear, please do not attempt to diagnose yourself. Please contact the Knee Institute at ORTHOKnox to be diagnosed and treated by Dr. David Hovis.
