Tendonitis
Patellar tendonitis, also known as jumper's knee, is caused by inflammation of the patellar tendon.
This tendon connects the patella (kneecap) to your tibia (shin bone). It is usually a sport–related injury caused by overuse of the knee joint, such as with frequent jumping on hard surfaces. This leg muscle contraction and forceful impact on hard surfaces puts strain on the tendon. Repetition of this action can cause the tendon can become inflamed.
Left untreated, patellar tendonitis can lead to tears in your tendon.
Patellar Tendonitis Symptoms
As with knee ligament injuries, you may experience pain, tenderness, and swelling of the knee. You may also experience pain while jumping, running, or walking, as well as when stretching or bending the leg. You may also have tenderness behind the lower part of the kneecap.
Because these symptoms can closely resemble other knee issues and injuries, it is always in your best interest to visit a knee specialist for a diagnosis and treatment plan.
